ARIZONA'S
INCARCERATION

TH
HIGHEST

Imprisonment is a brutal and costly response to crime, which traumatizes incarcerated people and hurts families and communities. Arizona has the fifth highest incarceration rate in the United States. Decades of bad policies have torn families apart and cost our state billions. The ACLU of Arizona’s Campaign for Smart Justice is an unprecedented, multi-year effort to reduce Arizona’s jail and prison populations by 50 percent and to challenge racism in the criminal legal system. Our movement is led by formerly incarcerated individuals, families impacted by mass incarceration, community organizers, and attorneys working in our neighborhoods, in our courts, at polling places, and in the halls of the state Capitol to make Arizona a state that invests in people, not prisons.

For years, county attorneys in Maricopa County have fueled growth in the prison population and supported policies that have devastated families and communities. A reform-minded county attorney can turn the tide by making a commitment to work in the interest of people, not prisons. Pledge to vote!
